Hi everyone,

I have just left another forum and joined this one. The other forum "jumped" all over me for admitting that I carried a Colt Mustang. Evidently they had rules against people admitting they carried anything less then a full size pistol. My mistake, I guess.

Except, I don't think I made the mistake. My normal carry pistol is a Springfield Champion or a 3" Kimber - both in .45. However, Minnesota summers are hot, humid, and at times very uncomfortable. There are times I wear as little as the law will allow (or my 60 year old sense of decency will allow). On those days and others when appropriate, I carry my Colt Mustang with no regrets. I like the gun. It is accurate. It is easy to carry. Maybe most importantly, the only time I have ever had to protect my family a with a gun it happened to be with my Colt Mustang. It wasn't much of a "thing", but the mere presence of a gun, even a "mouse" gun, put an end to the problem.

Little .380's might not be the ultimate protection, but they aren't bad either. I like mine.

Forum: Microguns

Savage Pistols and Safety

I have a Savage 1907 .32 acp, I love it. The first pistol to incorporate a staggered ten round magazine, and an action robust enough to be a serious contender against the 1911 during the US Army trials. I used it for carry until I discovered something pretty shocking, the 1907's firing pin just kind of sits on the primer, making carrying the pistol with a round in the chamber a risky business. I don't know how I feel about this, should I sport it anyway, of course changing some of my carrying habits? Or should I leave it in the safe?

Forum: Microguns

Doesn't seem to be much going on in this forum lately. Actually it looks dead in here. Must be a summer slow spell.

Just for conversation how small do you think a gun has to be to call it a microgun? Is there a clear rule or caliber size? Would my Polish p64 count? It's kinda small and could fit in pants pocket, but shoots a 9x18 Makarov round. That's between 380 and 9 mm.

Forum: General Discussion

Three men charged in the attempted pizza robbery Saturday had their bond set this morning at $250,000 each by Magistrate Brian Jeffcoat.

Justin Towan Roundtree 18; Jason Todd Beckham, 18; and Carlos Renard Dates, 20, all were told to be back in court April 23 for a preliminary hearing. Each is charged with criminal conspiracy and strong armed robbery of Pizza Hut delivery man Christopher Steven Miller, 43.

Miller shot and killed one of the assailants who attacked him when he attempted to deliver a pizza to a house on Avery Place Lane near Irmo High School.

Paul Andrew Sturgill Jr., 17, was killed in the shooting.

Sturgill, of 5819 Kenna Drive near Irmo, was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds later at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Sheriff James Metts said. An autopsy will be performed today. Sturgill was a senior at Irmo High School and a musician who received honor grades and planned to join the Army at the end of this school year, said his parents, Lynn and Paul Sturgill Sr., on Sunday night.

They said they were stunned to learn of their son's death.

"This was the first time he has ever been late for his curfew," said Lynn Sturgill, interviewed Sunday night in front of her Kenna Drive house, less than half a mile from Irmo High. "He's a good kid."

The shooting took place about 10:25 p.m. Saturday on Avery Place Lane, a quiet residential street less than a quarter-mile from Irmo High. Sturgill lay on the ground next to a driveway bleeding from wounds in the chest and stomach for a half-hour before medics arrived on the scene, neighbors said Sunday night.

Miller had a concealed weapons permit and was trying to retreat from his attackers while being beaten by one of them, Metts said. Such a permit allows a person to carry a hidden gun.

Miller carried a .45-caliber Taurus handgun in a fanny pack and took it out and fired while being beaten backward, Metts said. Such large-caliber pistols are known for their "stopping power" the ability to bring down an attacker instantly.

No weapons were recovered from Sturgill, Metts said.

Metts said Sunday afternoon it appears Miller acted within the law and will not face charges. However, police have made no final decisions and will discuss the incident with prosecutors, he said.

"At this point in time, his (Miller's) actions look very appropriate," Metts said, describing them as apparent "self-defense" because Miller was retreating and his assailants continued to attack.

The sheriff's department said Miller told detectives he did not want to talk publicly about the shooting.

"He is a little shaken; I understand he has a broken nose," Metts said.

Roundtree is suspected of having a connection to a gang, Metts said. Metts did not have details.

Initial checks on the young men's backgrounds indicate apart from the possible gang connection all had good records, Metts said.

Both Beckham and Dates said today they had nothing to do with the planned attack. Dates said he had tried to stop it.

Metts said that on Saturday night an order had been called in to Pizza Hut on Irmo Drive for two large, thin-crust pizzas with extra cheese for delivery to a house on Avery Place Lane.

However, when Miller showed up with the pizzas, he was met by a young man outside the house he was delivering to, Miller told detectives.

In fact, Metts said, the suspects had called the order in on a cell phone. The people who lived in the house had no knowledge of the pizza request, Metts said.

Miller gave the following version of events to police, Metts said: Miller exited the car with his pizzas. The young man standing in front of the house asked him if he had change for a $100 bill. Miller grew suspicious on noting that the young man had no money.

The young man began to hit him, and Miller spotted two other men coming toward him out of a nearby woods. Miller began to run away, pursued by the young man, who was hitting him. As he ran, he drew his pistol and fired, hitting him in the upper torso. The shots caused the two other men to run off.

After being shot, the assailant fell to the ground and began thrashing about and yelling.

"I thought he was saying, 'Let me die,'" said Sandy Briggs, on whose driveway the assailant's blood was still visible Sunday night. But another neighbor, Marsha Woods, believed the young man was shouting, "I don't want to die."

Neighbors, joined by sheriff's deputies, looked on as the young man lay bleeding. Deputies administered first aid, they said.

Paul Sturgill Sr. said his son had big plans.

"He was planning on joining the Army and wanted to be an Airborne Ranger," Sturgill said. "He had already signed papers."

Sturgill asked people not to judge his son on this incident. "He made one wrong decision. I guess he paid the ultimate price."

The pizzas were worth $25.13.

Police said Miller called police on his cell phone right after the shooting. Neighbors said they also called 911. Sheriff's deputies were on the scene within minutes, they said.

Judith Shealy, whose house on Avery Place Lane the pizzas were brought to, said Sunday she has never ordered pizza.

Metts said that although an investigation will continue, one thing about Miller's using his weapon is clear:

"This sends a loud message to the criminal element you don't know who's going to be armed and who's not going to be armed when you go to rob someone."

Forum: Second Amendment Discussion & News

A few of my guys.

Here's some of my buddies. First up, FEG PA-63 9mm Makarov.

And below, My Rohm .25 and my H&R Premier .32 S&W short, both of them stolen out of by backpack by an unscrupulous co-worker. He'd better hope he never, ever meets me again.
To heal my aching heart after that theft, I picked up a 1907 Savage .32, and my Targa GT-27 .25. I know, the picture is of a 1910 Savage, I actually don't have a picture of my 1907, I'll work on that, but you get the idea from this stock photo.

Next up is my Ortgies .32, I've since sold it, and totally regret doing so. I loved that little guy.

Here's my Springfield .45 acp Compact, I also sold this one, to be honest, my wrists are a little weak for a compact .45.

This one I bought for my little brother, a French Army Mle. 1935A, .32 French Long (7.65x22mm Longue). It's a bit of a curiosity, especially since the ammo is very scarce. I recently found out that .32 French Long is actually the exact same ammo as the old ".30 Pedersen" from the World War One "Pedersen Device," a conversion for the M1903 Sprinfield rifle that effectively turned the '03 into a sub machine gun. We scrapped the whole idea, but the French liked the round and adopted it.

Last but certainly not least, my Nagant M1895 double action gas-sealing revolver, 7.62x38R, a revolver I've learned to respect for it's durabilty and versatility. And yes, the rumours are true, you can use .32 S&W long, .32 H&R Magnum, hell out of curiosity I even stuck a .32 S&W short in there and it fired, not even a split casing. I was thuroughly surprised! You can also buy .32 acp cylinders for them. And since it's gas-sealing, they are a perfect candidate for a supressor. For some reason the source adresses for all the pictures of my own Nagant are really long and therefore I am unable to copy them, so here's another stock photo.

Forum: Show'em Off

Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Amendment

URGENT - U.S. Senate To Consider Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Amendment Early Next Week
http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=5061

Friday, July 17, 2009

Contact Your U.S. Senators TODAY And Urge Them To Support Your Right To Self-Defense

The U.S. Senate is now considering the National Defense Authorization Act (S. 1390). As a part of the consideration of that legislation, Senators John Thune (R-SD) and David Vitter (R-LA) will offer an amendment on Monday to provide for interstate recognition of Right-to-Carry permits. There is a very high likelihood of a Senate floor vote on this important and timely pro-gun reform on Monday or Tuesday.

While the right to possess firearms for self-defense within the home has long been respected under the law, for most of our nation's history, state and local governments have prohibited ordinary citizens from possessing firearms for self-defense in many settings outside the home. Recently, however, most state legislatures have taken steps to reduce those restrictions. In the last twenty years, the number of states that respect the right to carry has risen from 10 to 40 an all-time high.

Now is the time for Congress to acknowledge these changes in state laws and recognize that the right to self-defense does not end at state lines. Under the Thune-Vitter amendment, an individual who has met the requirements for a carry permit, or who is otherwise allowed by his home state's state law to carry a firearm, would be authorized to carry a firearm for protection in any other state that issues such permits, subject to the laws of the state in which the firearm is carried.

Contrary to "states' rights" claims from opponents who usually favor sweeping federal gun control, the amendment is a legitimate exercise of Congress's constitutional power to protect the fundamental rights of citizens (including the right to keep and bear arms and the right of personal mobility). States would still have the authority to regulate the time, place and manner in which handguns are carried.

Expanding Right-to-Carry will enhance public safety, and certainly poses no threat to the public. Criminals are deterred from attempting crimes when they know or suspect that their prospective victims are armed. A study for the Department of Justice found that 40 percent of felons had not committed crimes because they feared the prospective victims were armed.

And, carry permit holders have demonstrated that they are more law-abiding than the rest of the public. For example, Florida has issued more carry permits than any other state (1.5 million), but revoked only 166 (0.01 percent) as a result of firearms-related crimes by permit holders.

The Thune-Vitter amendment recognizes that competent, responsible, law-abiding Americans still deserve our trust and confidence when they cross state lines. Passing interstate Right-to-Carry legislation will help further reduce crime by deterring criminals, andmost important of allwill protect the right of honest Americans to protect themselves when deterrence fails.

The Thune-Vitter Amendment represents a giant step forward in the protection of the basic right to self-defense. Its passage will recognize that the rights of law-abiding Right-to-Carry permit holders should be respected, even when they travel outside their home state.

Please be sure to contact both of your U.S. Senators today, and urge them to cosponsor and support the Thune-Vitter amendment. E-mail them today and call them on Monday.
To find contact information for your U.S. Senators, call (202) 224-3121.

Forum: Second Amendment Discussion & News

US pocket knife ban WTF????

title says it all
http://www.kniferights.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=81&Itemid=1

U.S. Government Trying To Take Away Your Pocket Knives!

The U.S. Government is after your Pocket Knives! In a sneak attack, U.S. Customs has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposal would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its overly broad new definition of a switchblade would also include all one-handed opening knives and most other pocket knives!

Knife Rights was formed three years ago because we knew it was only a matter of time before there would be a major attempt to take away our knives, as has occurred in England, Europe and elsewhere. Little did we guess that the first major battle at a national level wouldn't come head on, but with government bureaucrats trying to sneak it by everyone, avoiding a more conventional legislative battle, which they know they'd likely lose.

Knife Rights is geared up to help win this fight, but we cannot do it without your help, your emails, your letters. The fight can only be won if we raise enough hell that they are convinced they will not get away with this. YOU are the most effective arrow in our quiver, the most powerful cartridge in our gun.

Click below for more on this knife grab and to find out how you can make a difference.

Knife Rights was formed three years ago because we knew it was only a matter of time before there would be a major attempt to take away our knives, as has occurred in England, Europe and elsewhere. Up until now, the battles have been fought at state and local legislative levels, such as the recent scare in Hawaii.

It has been a battle of a million little cuts for the most part, with occasionaly court and legislative fights thrown in. Little did we guess that the first major battle at a national level wouldn't come head on, but with government bureaucrats trying to sneak it by everyone, avoiding a more conventional legislative battle, which they know they'd likely lose.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) just a bit over two weeks ago on May 21st proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its new broad definition of a switchblade would also include one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints. At this point, one-hand opening and assisted opening knives are 80% of U.S. knife sales (per AKTI industry sources). For most knife companies, they represent all or the majority of their product lines. These are the knives Americans take with them to work and to play everyday.

Download the 63 page CPB document and read it for yourself.

Note, please, that CBP's interpretation of the Federal Switchblade Act forms the basis for national, state and even local law and judicial rulings in many cases. This ruling by CBP is NOT limited to just imports. This WILL affect virtually everyone who carries a pocket knife, no matter the type!

CBP came up with this absurd proposal and then tried slipping it into their regular notices, apparently hoping nobody would become aware of until too late. They provided for only the minimum 30-day comment period, and there's no email comments allowed. Obviously, they'd just as soon not hear from us. We're intending to disappoint them in that.

CBP's proposal which would have effects far beyond that suggested in the title of the proposal, "Proposed Revocation Of Ruling Letters And Revocation Of Treatment Relating To The Admissibilty Of Certain Knives With Spring-Assisted Opening Mechanisms," which would be bad enough even if it only did that. However, this proposal would make it illegal for the estimated 40 million law-abiding Americans who own and carry pocket knives to do so. It would also cost this country dearly in destroyed businesses, lost jobs and ruined families. Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars would be lost. CBP clearly appears to not have considered the consequences of this unnecessary, inappropriate and even illegitimate action. Since CBP is not required to consider the effects of their actions, only Congress or the courts can rein them in. If left to the courts, the industry and our rights will be devastated and America will lose much, regardless of who wins the legal fight.

The definition of what is a switchblade has been clear and settled for the most part since the Federal Switchblade Act was passed in 1958 and has been reaffirmed by many years of legal decisions. The Act is very clear that a switchblade must have an activating button on the handle. Without a button, it is not a switchblade and this has been upheld by numerous cases on many levels over the years. CBP's convoluted reasoning in their proposal to reach back beyond the law and to expand their regulatory purview by rationalizing "intent"as justification for this new interpretation is a stretch, at best, and illegitimate at worst. It simply doesn't meet the common sense test.

CBP's reaching beyond the clear language of the Act in making this proposal is particularly questionable and irreconcilable because it flies in the face of virtually unanimous recent state court rulings (including several cases in California, Texas, Illinois and Michigan) where the issue of assisted-opening knives has already been decided in favor of the existing clear interpretation, that they are not a switchblade. They cherry-picked a few bizarre and untypical rulings from New York state from some years ago to provide support for their proposal, ignoring the many more recent rulings.

For CBP to ignore this overwhelming existing body of law is inexcusably arrogant and borders on a reckless abuse of their power. For them to suddenly do an about face is akin to moving the goalposts after starting the game, and then completely changing the rules of the game besides, making every play ever devised illegal.

Beyond that, their significantly expanded interpretation of gravity and inertia knives, also included in the Act, would clearly make one-hand opening pocket knives illegal and according to industry sources, 80% of pocket knives sold today are one-hand or assisted openers. Beyond even that clearly excessively broad seizure of authority, we know from past unfortunate experience in many cases over the years that this sort of misinterpretation leads to potential abuse by law enforcement where even the most simple and innocuous Boy Scout folding pocket knife can be opened one-handed by use of dangerous and unsafe tricks, so that these too would be covered under this expanded federal definition. This ruling would therefore make almost all pocket knives subject to being considered switchblades.

The impact of this CBP ruling would go far beyond just imported knives because this "agency determination" will be used by domestic courts and law enforcement to determine what is a "switchblade" under both federal and state laws. Many states do not themselves define switchblades and simply rely on the federal definition and interpretation, which is only found in rulings by CBP. Since interstate commerce in switchblades is prohibited, except under very limited conditions, simply driving across a state line with a pocket knife in their possession would make someone a federal felon.

Knifemaking in the U.S. has enjoyed a renaissance in the past decade or two as the genius and innovation of American knifemakers, designers and manufacturers has created a booming and vital American industry with thousands of exciting new knife designs that improve the function, utility and safety of the lowly pocket knife, one of man's oldest and most useful tools. Millions of Americans have responded to this innovation, creating a vibrant industry. For the most part these are family owned businesses that are American success stories, the core of America's economic strength. This proposal by CBP would destroy all that for no good reason. They don't need a bailout; they just need to be left alone to prosper.

The knife industry tells us they employ nearly 24,000 Americans and have a nearly 6 billion dollar annual impact on our nation's economy. If this proposed ruling is allowed to stand, thousands of jobs will be lost at the direct cost of billions of dollars. That doesn't even begin to cover the enormous cost to the country of those that would become unemployed, the ruined businesses, foreclosed homes, years of litigation by both industry against CBP and who knows how many criminal trials and appeals as law-abiding Americans fight this abusive attempt to take away their knives, as well as many other devastating unforeseen effects of this ill-considered proposal. Thousands of American citizens' lives would be ruined. Millions of Americans would be impacted. The cost would be tragically huge, more so because it is neither necessary, nor desired by the vast majority of Americans.

We are in for the fight of our lives to save our Pocket Knives and our essential Knife Rights. We can only win if you do your part. You have to write NOW!

Our first step is to convince CBP that we deserve more time to respond. Knife Rights has sent a letter to CBP requesting an extension to the ridiculously short 30-day comment period.

We now need your help to make an impression on CBP. They figured that they could slip this by everyone with little notice. We need to let CBP know that they are not going to get away with it; that we noticed and we are not happy and that we will not stand by while they take away our pocket knives.

We need you to write CBP NOW!
Click here for a Model Letter you can send to CBP.

However, the reality is that CBP isn't required to listen to our demands, but they do have to answer to Congress. After you send a letter to CBP, giving them notice they are not going to sneak this by us, the next step is to inundate Congress with emails and letters.

If you want to be free to carry your pocket knives in the future, you need to write your Senators and Representative TODAY!
Click here for a Model Letter you can send to Members of Congress.

We have also prepared a Communicating with Congress page that includes tips to maximize the effect of your letters. This page was developed after consultation with experts who understand exactly how to get your message across to Members of Congress. We have also included easy links to find your Representatives, if you don't know who they are or the best way to reach them. How much of an impact your communication has can be significantly impacted by how and what you write. Our aim is to help maximize your impact so your Members of Congress actually listen and do something. PLEASE, take a few minutes to review our Communicating with Congress page BEFORE you act.

Help us stop this ill-conceived effort by CBP before it puts thousands of more Americans out of work and destroys one of America's oldest industries, causing great harm to our nation and many American families. Help us stop these faceless, heartless bureaucrats from destroying our essential American freedoms. This nation has many more important issues that need our attention and energy in this time of crisis.

NOW IS THE TIME WE MUST DO BATTLE! WE HAVE NO TIME TO WASTE.

GET ON YOUR COMPUTERS AN SEND THOSE EMAILS and LETTERS.

Knife Rights cannot do it without your help. Knife Rights is only as powerful as the forces we can bring to bear. You are the only truly effective weapon we have. Policitcans only listen to voters. NOW IS YOUR TIME TO ACT!

Because you are sending a hard copy letter and emails via Members' web forms, we won't know you did it unless you let us know.
